Sadness is a wicked serpent coiled up in the dark. It can kill itself with its own venom and also, crawl, stretch, climb, sway, dance, shed skin, and transform. Is suffering a harborer of our creative powers? Do we live in it on purpose? Anjoli Chadha was born in Brooklyn and raised in India. She started performing in India with cabaret band Emperor Minge, as the dancing member of the band. Since then she’s trained in martial arts like kalaripayattu and capoeira, ballet and more recently Samba. Her research in capoeira and samba had recently taken her to Brazil. She is interested in the topic of archetypes (warrior and seductress) and how summoning the energies of different archetypes into the body empowers the individual spiritually and psychologically.

Join exhibiting artists Gail Middleton and Mike Shane on a guided tour and open discussion on their exhibition In My Element. In My Element is a combined show of two photographers who are separated in age by several decades but who both gravitate to capturing photos of four basic elements of earth, air, fire, and water.

Now entering its third season, Music in Color turns its focus to the music and life of Gabriela Lena Frank, an American composer of Peruvian, Chinese, and Lithuanian Jewish descent. Having been commissioned to write a piece by OSL in 2015, Frank is featured in this program with a narration written and performed by Kirya Traber. The program includes selections from Frank’s own string quartets, as well as a piece by one of her inspirations, Chou Wen-chung, and five new works composed by Fellows of the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music and co-commissioned by OSL and GLFCAM. This concert is part of OSL’s Free Community Concert Series, in which the Music in Color program travels to all five boroughs of New York City. Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden’s Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is our Staten Island partner.

Join us for this unique experience with a sleepover as we explore themes of Tattfoo Tan’s exhibition. This program will include a dharma talk and meditation instruction led by Venerable Thupten Phuntsok. Participants are encouraged to have dinner on Friday night before attending. Participants will bring their own sleeping bag and sleep in one of the galleries. Breakfast will be served and guests will continue silent meditation until the end of the event. This event is held in partnership with the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art.
