The Liberian Women’s Chorus for Change

The Liberian Women’s Chorus for Change brings the power of Liberian traditional song to the forefront of efforts to make communities safe and strong. Composed of renowned singers and dancers from Liberia—Fatu Gayflor, Marie Nyenabo, Zaye Tete, and Tokay Tomah—the chorus raises awareness of the issue of domestic violence and other concerns of Philadelphia-area Liberian immigrants. The chorus was formed in response to these artists’ own community research that found local Liberian immigrant women have difficulty accessing resources and getting the support they need. Together, these award-winning performers create music intended to encourage dialogue around these issues, allowing women to make their voices heard and to take positive steps forward.

Abdou Mboup (Traditional African/Drumming/Senegal)

Abdou Mboup was born in the small town of Kébémer, Senegal, to a family of oral historians and musicians. Having studied traditional drumming under the tutelage of his family, Abdou soon established himself as a key figure in the development of the mbalax style (Senegalese dance music), becoming the first musician to incorporate various traditional instruments into Senegalese popular music. After joining the renowned Dakar-based group Xalam, which toured Europe and Africa under the patronage of South African trumpeter, Hugh Masekela, Abdou’s work attracted the attention of the American trumpeter Jon Hassell. Soon thereafter he became the percussionist of Eddy Louiss’s band, touring and recording with them for the next ten years. Concurrently, Abdou taught percussion at Loisirs et Culture music school in France and founded the jazz fusion band Sixun. He has toured and recorded in Africa, Europe, America, Southeastern Asia, Japan, Nepal, and India, and has written original composition for Jean-Luc Ponty, Pharoah Sanders, Tom Tom Club, and Randy Weston.
