SNUG HARBOR ANNOUNCES FAMILY EDUCATION PROGRAM
FOR SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER 2016
To Feature Interactive Classes for Children on
Nutrition, Agriculture, Horticulture, Yoga and the Environment
Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden announces a series of after-school educational programs for children and their families to be held in September and October 2016. The one-hour, interactive classes, are site-specific to Snug Harbor’s beautiful 83-acre campus. They were developed and will be conducted by Snug Harbor Educators. Admission is $10 for one child, $16 for two and $21 for 3.  Snug Harbor Family Members receive a $3 discount per ticket. The classes will be held from 2:30 to 3:30 PM at various locations on the campus. Parents or guardians must accompany children. Snug Harbor Education Programs are supported by a generous grant from the Staten Island Foundation.
“Snug Harbor’s Educational Classes have long been a resource for supplemental classes for preschools and grade schools,” said Snug Harbor CEO Lynn Kelly. “We are pleased to now offer families with young children the opportunity to explore the treasures of our idyllic campus and learn about nature and the environment under the guidance of our team of excellent educators.”
The classes being offered are:
Sprout to Mouth focuses on farming and nutrition. The class will learn how to prepare healthy food using seasonal produce as they tour Snug Harbor Heritage Farm located across from Building P. Recommended for children ages 5 to 10 years old. It will be offered Monday, September 12, 19, 26 and October 3, 10 and 17.
Little Yogis will teach children and their parents how to breathe, relax and commune with nature in the tranquility of our New York Chinese Scholars’ Garden. It’s never too early to introduce young ones to the physical and mental strength-building exercises and postures of this ancient discipline. Recommended for children ages 5 and older. The classes will be held Tuesdays, September 13, 20 and 27 and October 4, 11 and 18.
Autumn Leaves brings participants up close and personal with trees as they learn about the changes the end of summer will cause and why the trees change their clothes for winter. Children and their parents will also learn interesting ways to use leaves in craft making. Recommended for children ages 4 – 10 years old. These classes will be held in the Weissglass Gazebo on Wednesdays, September 14, 21 and 28 and October 5, 12 and 19.
Your Own Wetlands Monster includes a guided tour of Snug Harbor’s 10 acres of State-mapped wetlands. Class will discuss how organism survive in preserved wetlands. Parents can work collaboratively with their children to design their own organism to take home. Or they can work separately to discover more about their individual imaginations. Tour will begin at the Healing Gardens. Recommended for children ages 5 years old and older. The class will be held on Thursdays,September 15, 22 and 29 and October 6, 13 and 20.
Wetlands Science is a hands-on class to discover what lives in Snug Harbor’s 10-acres of State-mapped wetlands by participating in a pond dip. It also includes a discussion of the special ecology of wetlands. Each participant will be given a field journal to make notes on their discoveries to take home. Class will meet at the Healing Garden. Recommended for children ages 4 and older. Classes are offered on Fridays, September 16, 23, and 30 and October 7, 14 and 21.
