SNUG HARBOR HERITAGE FARM STAND OPENS FOR 2016 SEASON ON JUNE 17

Farm-fresh Vegetables and Herbs Available Fridays through Fall, Along with Neighborhood Organic Recyclable Waste Drop Off

Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden will open the Snug Harbor Heritage Farm for the 2016 season on Friday, June 17. The Stand will be open on Fridays from 3:00 to 6:00 PM, or until supplies run out, through the fall. Customers are encouraged to come early since produce typically sells out quickly. The Farm Stand will also serve as a drop-off site for vegetable food scraps. The Farm Stand is located adjacent to Snug Harbor Heritage Farm on the southeast corner of the Snug Harbor campus at 1000 Richmond Terrace.
“We at pleased to offer nutritious, farm-fresh produce and herbs at affordable prices to members of our local community,” said Snug Harbor CEO Lynn Kelly. “We are also pleased to partner with Food Bank For New York City to provide a portion of our harvest to local food pantries and soup kitchens, as well as training sessions for community organizations throughout the five boroughs on starting and maintaining urban farms.”
The Farm Stand offers fruits, vegetables, and herbs grown on Snug Harbor’s 2.5-acre Heritage Farm, the largest urban farm in the New York-Metro region. Selections will vary seasonally, but will include a wide variety of tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, potatoes, lettuce, kale, radishes, cabbage, beets, and other nutritious food products.
In cooperation with the NYC Department of Sanitation, the Farm Stand will also serve as a Residential Food Scrap Drop-Off site. Customers will be able to bring their vegetable food waste to the Farm Stand on Fridays to be composted by the NYC Compost Project. Items such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, filters and tea bags, bread scraps, nutshells, egg shells, beans, flour, and spices will be accepted for composting. Items that cannot be accepted include meat or fish scraps, cheese or dairy products, fats and oils or oily foods, coal or charcoal ashes

The Heritage Farm Stand was constructed under the supervision of Snug Harbor’s Farm Manager, aided by then Eagle Scout candidate Robert Buzzard. Supporters of the Farm include Capital One Bank, Con Edison’s Power of Green Education Initiative, Assemblyman Matthew J. Titone, Borough President James S. Oddo, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, City of New York Department of Parks & Recreation, City of New York Department of Sanitation, Mizzy Jonas Family Foundation, Kozy Shack Puddin’ Kids 1st Vincent Gruppuso Foundation and K.C.M. Plumbing.
