The 2017 Summer Reading Challenge choice is a very special book with a critically important message. It is called Way of the Warrior Kid, which was written by leadership instructor, former Navy SEAL and New York Times best-selling author Jocko Willink.  The book is about the trials and tribulations of unhappy fifth grader Marc, placing a well-deserved emphasis on physical activity, mental sharpness, and hard work.

This year’s book encompasses lessons that are more important than ever: self-confidence, the values of character and discipline, the importance of studying hard and physical fitness. The book can even help youngsters with how to deal with bullies. ” said Borough President Oddo.

“I wrote this book to teach kids some of the same methods I learned in the SEAL Teams to overcome adversity. I hope the kids enjoy the book and get some good lessons from it. I look forward to meeting some of these Warrior Kids in the fall when school starts again,” author Jocko Willink said of the news.

Way of the Warrior Kid will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, so principals and parents are urged to identify any students who wish to participate by RSVPing to Diane Marciuliano at DMarciuliano@StatenIslandUSA.com or (718) 816-2246 by June 9th. There will be 500 books made available.  All of the students who participate in the program will receive recognition at a gathering to be held at Borough Hall in the fall, where students will discuss the book and the lessons they have gleaned from it. Way of the Warrior Kid is a Feiwel & Friends Book, an imprint of Macmillian Publishing Group, LLC.
