What’s This About?

On Oct. 9, SINFI, Staten Island Child Wellness Initiative, St. John’s University, and City Harvest will hold the Snaxpo (Snacks Expo) at St. John’s from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Black Box Theater.

The event will:

  • Identify tasty and nutritious packaged snacks that middle- and high-school students will want to buy at their local corner stores
  • Connect manufacturers of the best snacks with deli owners and distributors so that they’re available at a good price point to the corner store customers

We’re looking for you–nutritionists, community members and leaders, students, school wellness team members, deli owners, and others–to taste-test samples of healthy snacks. Ten to twenty manufacturers will provide samples with price lists and nutritional information.

Snaxpo kicks off a new City Harvest project, in which college or high school students (depending on the borough) will run focus groups about the types of healthy snacks people would want to see in their corner stores. On Staten Island, high school students working with the SI Child Wellness Initiative and the St. John’s University Difference Makers program will run focus groups at local high and middle schools. Staten Island Neighborhood Food Initiative (SINFI) was created with support from City Harvest. City Harvest pioneered food rescue in 1982, and, this year, will collect 55 million pounds of excess food to help feed the nearly 1.4 million New Yorkers struggling to put meals on their tables.

The Staten Island Partnership for Community Wellness (SIPCW), which manages the SI Child Wellness Initiative, is a non-profit organization established more than 20 years ago to promote wellness and to improve the health of the Staten Island community through collaboration and a multidisciplinary approach. Focused on advances in behavioral health and physical wellness, SIPCW provides support to initiatives which move towards the integration of these vital issues.

SINFI’s Goal: Every North Shore neighborhood will have a store, restaurant, deli, or bodega that provides or uses fresh local fruit and vegetables so that anyone can follow the My Plate recommendations. The people living in the neighborhood will know where these stores are and support them.
