It’s time to say fir-well! Wrap up the holiday season by saying goodbye to your tree at Mulchfest. Put on your boots and haul your tree to one of the below locations from January 4-13, 2019. We’ll convert it to mulch and make NYC even greener.

A current candidate of our Master Composter certificate program would like to survey Staten Island community gardens about their composting activities.
The purpose of this survey is to gather feedback from fellow composters in order to:
Document the current state of composting in Staten Island community gardens
Understand capabilities and pain points for Staten Island composters
Identify how future Master Composting projects can support community gardens
The results of this survey will also help us plan the spring 2019 Garden Get Together. As active composters, we are looking for your input to help achieve these goals!

NYC Urban Soils Institute’s 3rd Annual Urban Soils Symposium: Urban Soils & Remediation Restoration Rehabilitation Regeneration Resilience

A YEAR-LONG symposium! The symposium is just the beginning: the start of the conversation and deliberations of the theme of urban soils & remediation, restoration, resilience, rehabilitation, recovery, and regeneration. There are so many unknowns, and we believe we need at least a year to really delve into the known and unknown and go from idea to implementation. Therefore, we decided to continue the symposium through panels/roundtables/workshops and lecture series that will take place once a month throughout 2019 on specific topics or problems. We will post the workshop themes on our website and discuss them at the symposium. If you have questions or ideas, please let us know!

The best way to learn about compost is to make it, and attending our Turn & Learns will make you a pro. Bring a water bottle, wear closed toe shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. If you help us make compost, you can take compost.

Bring your food scraps to Snug Harbor! Drop them off at the Compost Demo Site 7 days a week from dawn until dusk.
NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to make and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are carried out by DSNY-funded teams hosted by seven partner organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Big Reuse, Earth Matter NY, the Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and the New York Botanical Garden.
