Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden will host a public Open House on Saturday, April 9 from 10:00 to 5:00 PM at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art. The day’s events will feature the opening of two new art exhibits: Stories of Staten Island (SOS): An Installation, and Unseen and Unknown: Staten Island and its Islands, and the inauguration of two new spaces: Snug Harbor Commons Galleries and Snug Harbor Dance Center. There will be an official opening ceremony at 2:00 PM. Admission for the day is free.

 

“This is truly an exciting time for Snug Harbor and we invite everyone with a love of or interest in art and culture to join us to initiate these wonderful exhibits and new spaces where talented young artists with diverse backgrounds and talents will be showcased,” said Snug Harbor CEO Lynn Kelly.

 

With Unseen and Unknown, Snug Harbor brings to Staten Island the work of NYC-based/world renowned photographer, Accra Shepp. Shepps’ exhibit will survey the islands that make up New York City, with a focus on Staten Island. It is part of a larger project that explores the more than 40 islands the makeup New York City. Accra Shepp’s work has been exhibited extensively in the United States as well as abroad. He has been associated with a variety of academic institutions, including a visiting artist residence at Bowdoin College and posts at Princeton University, Sarah Lawrence College, Wellesley College and Columbia University. Unseen and Unknown was curated by Gabri Christa, Snug Harbor’s Artistic Director. The exhibit will be on display at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art through. The exhibit of SHARP (Snug Harbor Artist in Residence Program) Sophia Dawson will also be on view through May 9. Regular admission to the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is $5, Wednesdays through Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

SOS: Stories of Staten is the inaugural exhibit of the newly renovated Snug Harbor Commons Galleries, dedicated to providing exhibit space for underserved local artists. SOS will feature an art exhibit with works by works by Arjuna Routte-Prieur, Diah, ErinKelli Kilbane, Debbie Roxx, Danny Reph, La Femme Cheri. There will also be five curated events by hip-hop artist/songwriter, William “Starda” Perry, and drummer/producer Charlie Rock, who have been working together since high school to bring positive change to their Staten Island community and to build platforms for fellow young artists to showcase their talents. It will be the first installation in the newly renovated Snug Harbor Commons Galleries, which is dedicated to providing exhibit space for Staten Island’s underserved young artists. The exhibit will be on display until June 5. Admission to Snug Harbor Commons Galleries is free, Wednesdays through Sundays from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Participants at the Open House will also be invited to visit the newly renovated Snug Harbor Dance Center on the second floor. The center consists of three studios available for performances, classes, rehearsals, studio showings, and photo and video shoots. On April 9, two free dance classes will be offered to the community. At 12:30 PM, BE Yoga will conduct a yoga class, and at 3:00 PM, our PASS/SHARP PA artist Lacina Coulibaly will give a lesson in African dance. The Snug Harbor Dance Center was renovated with the support of the Mertz Gilmore Foundation through its New York City Dance program.

Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is one of the largest ongoing adaptive reuse projects in America.
