A Community Festival Celebrating Earth Day, Art, and Cooperative Collaboration

APRIL 16, 2018, Staten Island, NY — The St. George Day Festival, a local Earth Day and arts celebration, is Sunday, April 22, 2018, from 11 am to 5 pm at Tompkinsville Park on Little Bay Street, on Staten Island. This free event features a variety of live performances, art, music, spoken-word events, a sneak preview of the new film “Show Dogs,” and many participatory activities.

Among the highlights, this year are an International Food Sampling Station,  a “Meet Your Neighbor” community picnic area, a big free store/swap, a seed and seedling swap, craft vendors, and Art Around the Park, which is a free fence show. The Staten Island Neighborhood Food Initiative will give out samples from more than a dozen local ethnic restaurants and supermarkets, and neighborhood restaurants will offer special deals to festival goers.

Children will be delighted to try out the the NYPD rock-climbing wall, make magic wands, collaborate on a chalk mandala and a construction fence mural, write poems about “Why I love the Earth…” and then read them aloud as part of the Staten Island Creative Community’s spoken-word programs, and enjoy the colorful Dragon Parade at 2 p.m.

Promoters of the soon-to-be-released movie Show Dogs will offer a fun photo booth opportunity, a sneak peek at the film, and free promotional items.

In the Earth Day section will be New York City Parks, a free bicycle repair area, Farmer John and the Staten Island CSA, the New York Public Library, Staten Island MakerSpace, and other tables. The Urban Park Rangers will bring their favorite animals, weather permitting.

An Earth Day event like no other, the festival brings together people to experience the rich diversity of the North Shore, learn more about how to take care of the environment we all share, and have fun sharing our gifts and skills and getting to know our neighbors better.

The day starts out with a cleanup from 9 am to 10:30 am organized by Friends of Tompkinsville Park. Staten Islanders are invited to come help clean up the park and to volunteer with other aspects of the festival set-up and break-down.
