Instructor: Allison Samuels

After briefly covering safe machine and shop practices, we will delve straight into cabinetry! Over two weeks students will design, build and finish their own small cabinets to take home. Moving at a brisk pace, we will cover how to extract a cut list and plan of action from your drawings, dimension parts and foursquare lumber, simple face frame joinery, cabinet construction and finishing. While some woodworking experience is helpful, all skill levels are welcome.

UnCommon Pages Bookmaking Workshop @ Greenbelt Nature Center (in Blood Root Valley)

Learn about the Freshkills Park transformation, see examples of native and invasive plants, and create your very own passport-sized field notebook using paper that’s made from plants at the park! This workshop is part of an ongoing art project called UnCommon Pages, where artist Susan Mills has made paper sheets from an invasive plant found at Freshkills Park called Phragmites, reimagining the plant as a form of recycled art. This program is geared for adults and families with children ages 8+.

NYRR Open Run: Conference House Park @ Visitor Center (in Conference House Park)

Open Run is a community-based, volunteer-led running initiative bringing free weekly runs and walks to local neighborhood parks, across all five boroughs of NYC. All runs are directed by volunteers and are free to all participants. The finish line is open until the last person is done. The courses vary based on the park, but the courses are between 2.5 and 3 miles long. Participants are encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the run and to leave their valuables at home – bag check is not provided. No need to do anything before the run, just show up. Open to all ages, experience levels, walkers, strollers, dogs: All are welcome! This program is in coordination with NYC Parks’ Community Parks Initiative .

Dress for the weather and bring water and a lunch.We’ll follow the trails south through La Tourette to High Rock Park to see what the winter has to offer, and eventually return to the parking lot in Willowbrook Park. If there is snow cover there may be able to track wildlife, and perhaps we see some of our wintering birds. If there is rain, it will be“fun in the mud.”

Even with no prior 3D printing experience, the first thing you will do is design a 3D model and send it to the machines to be made while the class continues with the other topics.

Material Selection-
With the explosive growth in 3d printing, material choices are increasing nearly more than the printers themselves. Learn what makes each material different and which one to use for your intended application.

The Instructor
Michael Perina is the founder of Assembyl 3D and a lifelong Staten Island resident. He built his first 3D printer in 2010 and launched his first company 3dfactory LLC shortly after, helping others build their first printer. 3dfactory LLC went on to sell over 500 DIY 3D printer kits around the world, with many of them going to schools and universities. In 2015, he formed Assembyl 3D offering local 3D printing services, 3D printed products and became Staten Island’s first local business to specialize in additive manufacturing. Assembyl 3D has since grown and is now a reseller for many OEMs while also offering consulting, training, STEAM infused curriculum and technical support. Michael has spoken at various tech expos regarding 3D printing and works with many schools and organizations here on the island helping them introduce and/or maintain this incredibly powerful technology.
