In order to provide a great experience for all participants, we are limiting this event to 2,000 riders.
The Tour de Staten Island is a friendly, non-competitive ride. Cycle through diverse Staten Island on the cusp of spring. Both the 35 and 50 mile routes cover some of the most breathtaking – and lesser known – spots of Staten Island. Rest stops include some of Staten Island’s most bucolic and stunning spots: Freshkills Park, Great Kills Park, Historic Richmond Town and the oceanfront with its striking views of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and New York Harbor.
Invite your friends and family to cheer for you along the route! There are no road closures so riders are asked to please stay to the right of the road. Be sure to ride at a safe speed and obey traffic laws at all times. We ride rain or shine.

Registration will close once the event hits 2,000 riders. You will not be able to register on the day of the event.
Bib Pickup and Check-in
Packet pick-up will only be available the day of the event. Please plan to arrive early. We will not mail rider packets out in advance.

When you arrive at Flagship Brewery please find the bib-pickup area and wait in line. Please be sure to have your Tour de Staten Island registration confirmation email accessible on your phone. It is unlikely that you will need this but have it ready just in case. After you have your bib in hand, you can head to the start line and await release.
Riders who arrive after 9:45 am will not be provided with a bib. Please do your best to arrive at your check-in time. The ferry runs every 30 minutes and will fill up quickly. 50-mile riders should be on the 7:30 am ferry. 35-mile riders should be on the 8:30 am ferry.
What is your cancellation policy?
There is no rain date; we ride rain or shine. In case of inclement weather, Transportation Alternatives reserves the right to cancel/alter/modify the tour for safety concerns. In any case, we do not refund tour entry fees or transfer registrations to another TransAlt event. In the unlikely case a tour is canceled, you may claim your registration fee as a tax-deductible donation.
If you have to cancel for personal reasons, we are still unable to offer you a refund. All funds raised through TransAlt bike tours support Transportation Alternatives’ live-saving work for safe streets in New York City.
Will roads be closed to motor vehicles for the bike tour?
The Tour de Staten Island does not have any road closures. Riders should be prepared to ride confidently alongside traffic.
How fast will I need to ride to complete the tour?
35-milers will need to ride at approximately 10 mph. 50-milers should be riding at 12 mph. Please note: The amount of time you spend at a rest area is important! Be sure to consult the rest area closing times on your cue sheet to make sure you can reach the next stop before it closes. The finish line closes at 4pm at Flagship Brewery.
What forms of identification are valid for me to pick up my registration packet?
Please bring a copy of your registration confirmation email to packet pick up.
Can I ride a different route than the one I registered for?
Yes. If you decide you would like to ride a different route, YOU CAN! It is not necessary to inform us. Please check the “Bib Pickup and Check-in” section of this page to determine your new start time and to find your new ferry boarding time.
What kinds of snacks will there be at the rest stops?
Each rest stop will have water, Nuun, KIND bars and fruit. If you’re on the 50 mile route, you will have access to rest stops with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Please pack a lunch or bring some cash for a more substantial meal, if you think you’ll require more food. Please note: We do not provide bottled water. You must bring your own bottle.
How long do I have to ride before I reach a rest stop?
If you’re on the 35 mile route: there are rest stops at mile 12 and 24.
If you’re on the 50 mile route: there are rest stops at mile 12, 24 and 42.
Will there be SAG vehicles along the route?
There will be limited SAG (support and gear) on the route. The SAG vehicle will pick up riders and return them only to the finish area. Riders who cannot complete the ride, but are located within walking distance to a SIR stop will be asked to use the train.
Are there ride marshals on the route?
Yes – they are identifiable by their orange vests. They can assist you with minor bike issues or repairs. However, please be aware that ride marshals do not carry extra supplies, so make sure you bring extra tubes or any other supplies you think you may need.
Can kids participate in the Tour de Staten Island?
Kids are welcome to join. Riders under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a guardian. Helmets are mandatory for children 14 and under and strongly encouraged for riders of all ages. Children under 10 years old are encouraged to ride in a carrier or on a tandem bike with a parent. The Tour de Staten Island does not have any street closures so your kids should be confident enough to ride alongside traffic.
Are there any bag restrictions?
No. Please feel free to use backpacks, hydration packs, panniers, baskets, and any other bag you have at home!
Is there a cap on registration?
Yes. We are only allowing 2,000 riders on the course. So be sure to secure your spot right now!
Can I edit the details of my registration online?
There is currently no way for you to edit your own registration information. Please email us at email@example.com so we can help you fix any issues.
Is the Tour de Staten Island a charity event?
Yes! The Tour de Staten Island is produced by and benefits Transportation Alternatives. We’re working on making the streets of NYC a safer place to live for you and yours!
I ordered a t-shirt during registration. Where can I pick it up?
You can pick up your t-shirt at the beginning or end of the ride.
Am I registered for the tour?
All riders receive a confirmation email after they complete registration online. If you’re unsure about your registration status, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to confirm.
Do I need to register separately if I’m planning to ride on a tandem bike with a friend?
Yes, you do. Every rider on the course is required to register for the tour.
When is the next bike tour?
Glad you asked! The next bike ride is the NYC Century Bike Tour in September. Once you sign up for the Tour de Staten Island you’ll automatically receive alerts whenever registration launches for our other rides.
Where can I park my car?
At Transportation Alternatives, we are dedicated to reclaiming streets from automobiles. We encourage participants to bike or use public transportation to our start sites and we do not provide a designated area for parking. If driving to the event, please note that there is no parking allowed on Minthorne Street.
Ways to Get There
By Staten Island Ferry
Ferries depart Manhattan’s Whitehall Terminal every hour on the half-hour on Sunday mornings. See the full Staten Island schedule for details.
The ferry ride takes approximately 30 minutes. The start of the ride is less than a half mile from the ferry terminal. Find a Google map of directions here from the St. George Ferry Terminal to the start location.
IMPORTANT: Please arrive at Whitehall Terminal 30 minutes prior to ferry departure time to allow for a security screening — there will be many eager cyclists waiting to board — and to secure your spot on the ferry. You’ll board the ferry through the lower level of the terminal.

Get off at Tompkinsville Station. Flagship Brewing Company is just east of the station, across Minthorne Street.
We encourage participants to bike or use mass transit to arrive at the start of the ride. If you do drive to the start, please note that there will be no parking allowed on Minthorne Street, near the start of the ride.
Get Ready to Ride
Visit one of the many New York City-area bike shops that support TransAlt advocacy. Join TransAlt when you register for the tour and your membership card will get you a discount at any shop on our list.
A bike shop can also help you make sure that your bike fits you correctly: small adjustments to seats or brakes can do wonders for your riding style. While you’re at the shop, make sure that your tires are fully inflated. For long distance rides, it is especially important not to go by “feel.” Get a tire gauge and check the tires for the recommended PSI (pounds per square inch). See a video.
The day before the ride, be sure to perform an ABC check on your bicycle. ABC stands for Air, Brakes, Cranks, Cogs and Chains. Make sure all these components are working properly before ride day.
What to Bring
- Your bike! We will not have bikes available for rental on the day of the event. Any bike in good working condition that you feel comfortable riding will do.
- Helmet (required by New York State law for children under 14, strongly recommended for all others — make sure your helmet fits snugly)
- Two water bottles filled with water
- MetroCard (there will be extremely limited SAG, if you cannot complete the ride, you may be asked to walk to a nearby train station)
- Patch kit, pump and tire levers
- Bike lock

- Identification card
If you have food allergies or a specific diet, we suggest you bring your own snacks.
