CitizensNYC Announces $1 Million Available in Micro-Grants & Calls for Support of “The New Yorkers for New York” Fundraising Campaign

Susan R. Cullman to be honored this month as part of a campaign that celebrates five extraordinary women helping the city recover from the pandemic

NEW YORK  – Citizens Committee for New York City (CitizensNYC) is now accepting applications from community leaders for its All in Neighborhood Grants program, which provides micro-grants of up to $10,000 for neighborhood improvement projects. Applicants are encouraged to apply by March 22 to be considered for the organization’s first-round priority deadline.

In lieu of the organization’s in-person gala fundraising event, CitizensNYC is embarking upon a five-month-long virtual fundraising campaign The New Yorkers for New York, which will honor five extraordinary women who are working to rethink, rebuild, and reimagine New York City. The organization aims to raise funds this year in order to make the grants possible. Gifts will be matched one-to-one, up to $150,000 now through March 19.

This month, CitizensNYC will honor Susan R. Cullman as The Activist. Cullman became the Co-Chair of the Republican Coalition for Choice in 1991 and spent her days on Capitol Hill and across the country, championing a woman’s right to choose. Even though she made a detour to Washington, she has been part of the fabric that has made New York in so many ways. Susan, whose family established roots in NYC centuries ago, serves as a board member or a former board member of several NYC nonprofits including Citizens Committee for New York City, The New York Women’s Foundation, The New York Landmarks Commission, Mount Sinai Health System, and many others.

“Not just in this country but around the world, women have been put on hold to be able to get to where they’d like to be. I’m very happy to be born a woman in this era in the United States. Maybe we are coming of age in a way where women can be encouraged to fulfill their abilities,” said Cullman. “One thing I love about Citizens is that they get at the really small issues and it’s the little things that really add up to what’s important in life.”

Each month the campaign will highlight one of the five honorees, each of whom have committed to rolling up their sleeves to help the city recover from the pandemic including one of it’s grantee partners, Nicole Lee, as well as Frida Polli, Ph.D., Sue Suh and TIME, and Rhina Valentin. The showcase event is set to take place on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

“We felt it was important this year to ensure that our New Yorkers for New York honorees were reflective of the vast diversity of New York City — in a way that is reminiscent of the culture that we all know, love, and hold dear. Our distinguished honorees will play a key role in helping to shine a light on the New Yorkers that are most in need at this time,” said Dr. Rahsaan Harris, CEO of Citizens Committee for New York City.

One of the nation’s oldest micro-funding organizations, CitizensNYC has a longstanding history of celebrating and supporting civic leaders.
