Community gardens citywide

Registration has opened for students interested in—the GreenThumb Youth Leadership Council (YLC). The program, which starts in April and goes through July, gives students ages 14 – 21 the chance to volunteer at community gardens across the city.

 Each student will be assigned to a specific community garden and will complete projects such as building irrigation systems, BBQ pits, garden murals and chicken coops.

Last year, 125 students from all five boroughs joined the Youth Leadership Council. Through the course of the program, students will volunteer a minimum of 20 service hours in their assigned garden and learn about agriculture, composting, botany, and construction.

                                   This year’s 16 participating gardens include:

  • Brooklyn: TLC Sculpture Garden; Jes Good Rewards Children’s Garden; St. John Cantius Parish Garden; A Better Community Garden; GreenSpace on Fourth
  • The Bronx: Melrose New Generation Garden; Jardin de Roca; Rainbow Garden of Life and Health; Green Patch
  • Manhattan: Jenny’s Garden; LaGuardia Corner Garden; Dorothy McGowan Garden; Edgecombe Avenue Garden
  • Staten Island: Skyline Community Garden; Joe Holska Garden
  • Queens: Discovery Garden

                                    Registration is open through March 5.
