SNUG HARBOR PRESENTS A PERFORMING ARTS SALON SATURDAY
PRODUCTION WITH CHOREOGRAPHER NIA LOVE
Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden announces another production in its Performing Arts Salon Saturdays (PASS) series on Saturday, May 28 at the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art. The production, entitled G1 (HOST), is a solo performance by powerhouse choreographer/dancer/teacher, Nia Love. It will be presented at 6 PM with a pre-performance reception at 5 PM. There will be a post-performance discussion with a guest moderator following the performance. This production is curated by Snug Harbor’s Artistic Director, Gabri Christa. Admission is $10. Reservations are available by visiting Brown Paper Tickets. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the performance at the door. The Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art is located on Snug Harbor’s beautiful 83-arce campus at 1000 Richmond Terrace.
“Nia Love is an amazing dancer, choreographer and teacher who incorporates a crisp, modern approach with African, post-modern, Butoh, funk and blues sensibilities,” said Gabri Christa. “We are truly delighted to bring this exciting and exhilarating performer to Staten Island and Snug Harbor.”
It has been said if there is a Shaman in the modern dance community, it is Nia Love.  In this remarkable solo performance, she forges runaway trails and follows scents to find prints left behind to reconstruct a defragmented fugitive body broken by its status as property. She approaches the performance with a sense of abandonment to fine tune modern techniques and break down inhibitions.
Nia Love earned an MFA in Dance with Distinction in choreography from Florida State University and a BFA in Theatre Directing from Howard University. She has performed and produced more than 30 works that have been performed nationally and internationally. She trained ballet in Cuba with Alicia Alonzo, in Butoh in Japan with Min Tanaka, and in traditional court dancing of Ghana with King Osei Tutu II. She is a two-time recipient of the Fulbright Fellow Award for research and teaching. Her work has been showcased at Sadler’s Wells (London), the Joyce Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Central Park’s Summer Stage, Dance Theater Workshop and Symphony Space. Considered among the most prestigious and innovative artists in New York City, Nia Love has taught at Dance New Amsterdam for 17 years.
PASS is a curated performance series presented on the last Saturday of every month. The series focuses on original works in performing arts in different stages of development. When possible, works are developed in residence at Snug Harbor which serves as an incubation lab. Each PASS production has a pre-performance reception and a post-performance artist talk moderated by an expert in the field.
