SNUG HARBOR’S ANNUAL PLANT SALE SCHEDULED FOR MAY 5-6, 2017

Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden is pleased to announce its annual Plant Sale for Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6. The Plant Sale takes place on the beautiful 83-acre Snug Harbor campus at 1000 Richmond Terrace, at the Perennial Garden and Carl Grillo Glass House Lawn. Admission is free both dates, and the event is rain or shine.

Friday, May 5: The Plant Sale runs from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM and is open to Snug Harbor members only. To become a member and get the first pick of the plants for sale, visit snug-harbor.org/support/membership. On sale will be unusual and hard-to-find annuals, tender and hardy perennials, including herbaceous peonies, various iris species, and cultivars. The Heritage Farm will offer seedlings from our heated poly-house ready to transplant in your home garden. Farm seedlings include various herbs, broccoli, chard, eggplant, kale, tomatoes, and peppers, all grown without the use of chemicals, pesticides, or synthetic fertilizers. The NYC Compost Project will give away 15-pound bags of DSNY Compost (while supplies last). Snug Harbor’s on-campus outdoor café, Harbor Eats, will be open with sandwiches, snacks and salads for sale from 11:00 AM-5:00 PM.

Saturday, May 6: The Plant Sale runs from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM and is open to the general public. In addition to the wide variety of plants on sale, there will be several educational presentations:

11:00 AM-12:00 PM:
* Shephali Patel of the NYC Compost Project will present “Healthy Herb Start” on growing and caring for herbs, held at the Compost Demonstration Site.
* Dick Doran, nationally renowned orchid grower, will critique the Staten Island Orchid Society and Deep Cut Orchid Society’s orchid competition in Building P.

12:00 PM:
* Jeff Li of the SI Orchid Society will present “Orchids 101.”

1:00 PM-2:00 PM:
* Wambui Ippolito of Snug Harbor’s Horticulture team will present on unusual annuals for containers at the Carl Grillo Glass House.
The NYC Compost Project will also be on hand to give away 15-pound bags of DSNY Compost (while supplies last). Harbor Eats will be open from 9:30 AM-5:00 PM.
