Empower Your Business with Bespoke Strategies: New Course Equips Professionals with Expertise

In order to stay on the top of your game and excel in your industry it is important to stay up to date and informed on current practices. It is also critical to network with peers to learn from others and grow as a community.

This half-day Technical Assistance and Professional Development Conference is specifically designed to help artists, artist educators and organizations grow in their disciplines and in their ability to provide art services to the community.

Session topics and speakers include:

Cost of Culture: Labor and the Creative Workforce/Cultural Workers
Facilitator: Risa Shoup, Fourth Arts Block
Join Risa Shoup for an interactive discussion around labor and the creative workforce, specifically methods for cultural workers to assess the cost of culture and producing new work. As “the arts” are heralded as engines of economic growth and development, this session will share resources and facilitate a conversation about how to communicate and document the costs associated with your cultural work.

Culture Workers Unite – Unions, Labor Laws, and Work Place Politics in Public Sector Arts Administration
Facilitator: Maida Rosenstein, Local 2110-UAW
Join Maida Rosenstein of the Local 2110-UAW (Technical, Office & Professional Union) for an interactive discussion and Q & A surrounding employee rights and labor laws in public sector and arts organizations. The workshop will also explore the precedents, process, and prosepcts for unionizing arts nonprofit organzations as well as other methods for collective organization in settings where unionization would not yeald positive results. Work in the arts and cultural sectors can often be synonomous with low pay, poor benefits, lack of job security, stretched resources, and hierarchical workplace interactions, where workers, artists, adminstratos, and board members operate in more or less separated or isolated spheres of power. Through this workshop we hope to open a dialogue and share information that can support more democratic and cooperative work environments in our field as well as advocate for a higher standard of overall compensation when it comes to the budding industry of culture work.

The Ethical Field: Ethnography and Place Making from the Roots Up
Facilitator: Naomi Sturm, Staten Island Arts
Join Staten Island Arts Director of Folklife Naomi Sturm for an overview of contemporary fieldwork methods and documentation techniques used widely within the disciplines of folklore, anthropology, and ethnomusicology. Then learn, through personal accounts, case studies and interactive role play, what it means to apply these methods in creative place making and community building.

Public Art Public Housing: A Case Study on the Stapleton Houses
Facilitator: Claudie Mabry, Groundswell
Through community interviews, surveys, and explorations of their own experiences, youth artists living in the Stapleton Houses will examine the history, hidden treasures, challenges, and strengths of their developments, in order to develop a vision for positive change. Led by artists and informed by the study of contemporary art, participants will develop a mural design that encapsulates their research and the story they want to tell before fabricating a total of 3 murals. All youth are compensated as apprentice artists for their participants, and are strengthening 21st century workforce skills.

Social Good In Your Neighborhood with Social Media
Facilitator: Marilyn Zayfert, illumiNET Digital Marketing
A must attend event for anyone who wants to elevate the achievements of local community, art or other public events by combining best practices using social media applications in online campaigns. There’s No Free Lunch! Working with Volunteers and Interns Legally
Facilitator: Judith Moldover, Lawyers Alliance
Volunteers, when managed effectively, are a tremendous asset to a nonprofit organization. But volunteers must be managed carefully to ensure that they are an asset and not a liability. Similarly, recent court challenges by unpaid interns present new legal risks. Participants will be able to structure valid volunteer and intern relationships using proper techniques for selecting and managing your volunteer workforce so as to reduce legal risk.
