The Staten Island-bound upper level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge will be closed to traffic Monday, December 21, 2015 between 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for paving work. The lower level westbound will remain open with three lanes to Staten Island, and there will be no impact to eastbound rush hour traffic.This off-peak direction closure of the upper level will start at 8:30 a.m. and remain in effect until 3:00 p.m., with the exception that after 10:00 a.m. Belt Parkway traffic will have access to one lane on the westbound upper level.The lower level westbound will remain fully open and available to traffic from the BQE/Gowanus Expressway/I-278 and Belt Parkway. HazMat vehicles will be directed for escort across the Upper Level. Belt Pkwy traffic is encouraged to follow detour signs for access to the Lower Level via Bay 8th Street and 4th Avenue exits.The work is extremely dependent on good weather and may be canceled in the event of rain. In the event of unfavorable weather the paving and closures will be rescheduled for Tuesday, December 12.The upper level staged roadway construction that began in March 2015 will continue through the summer of 2017.
