A Historical Gem
The Our Lady of Mount Carmel Grotto, located at 36 Amity Street behind St. Joseph’s R.C. Church, is a true hidden gem. Built in 1937 by members of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society, the grotto is a testament to the dedication and craftsmanship of Italian immigrant laborers. Constructed with concrete and thousands of smooth, rounded stones and seashells from the Staten Island shore, this shrine stands between Amity Place and Virginia Avenue.
A Celebration of Heritage
The festival kicks off with free entertainment every day at 7:30 p.m., featuring a variety of performances that celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the community. One of the highlights of the festival is the procession from the shrine through the streets of Rosebank, a tradition that has been upheld for over a century.
In 2001, the grotto was recognized for its historical significance and was placed on both the New York and National Registers of Historic Places. The society, established in Rosebank in 1903, has been a cornerstone of the community, fostering a deep sense of heritage and tradition.
Spiritual and Cultural Festivities
Throughout the festival and the year, visitors light candles and pray at the shrine, which is open 24/7. A special mass will be held at noon on Sunday at the Church of St. Joseph on Tompkins Avenue. This program not only honors the Blessed Mother but also celebrates the Italian culture and traditions that have been integral to the establishment of St. Joseph’s Church, co-sponsor of the event alongside the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society.
