CALL FOR ENTRIESTHE EXHIBITIONThe Alice Austen House is currently accepting photography and multimedia submissions for Staten Island’s first Triennial of Photography, to be exhibited March – August 2016. Staten Island Unlimited will attempt to uncover the state of contemporary photography on Staten Island and showcase work that is often under-represented citywide. Featuring photography by Staten Island residents and others looking at the borough, this juried exhibition will aim to find contemporary themes and narratives that photographers are currently exploring in their work through traditional, digital, and innovative uses of the medium. THE JURYAn expert panel of judges will review and select entries for inclusion in the curated exhibition. The panel includes:James Estrin – Senior Staff Photographer, Lens Blog Co-Editor, The New York TimesMeagan Ziegler Haynes – Senior Producer, VSCOElizabeth Renstrom – Photo Editor, Photographer, VICEMonica Valenzuela – Deputy Director, Staten Island Arts ELIGIBILITYThe Call for Entries is open to Staten Island residents or anyone living off-island making work on or about Staten Island. To qualify, photographs must be taken between January 2012 and December 2015. Long-term thematic projects which contain older images will be considered, as long as the body of work includes images made within the past three years. TERMSThe Triennial Call for Entries is open November 14 – December 31, 2015. All entries must be received by the deadline in order to be considered for review. Artists are responsible for printing accepted images. The museum will provide framing materials and service for installation. Each submitted photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the entrant. By entering the entrant represents, acknowledges, and warrants that he or she has full power and authority to enter the photograph, and that the photograph does not infringe any copyright or violate any other intellectual property rights. The entrant agrees to indemnify Friend of Alice Austen from any and all third party claims arising from the photograph. Entries that do not meet guidelines will not be considered. FEESThere are no fees to enter HOW TO ENTERArtists should fill out the online submission form via Submittable. The online submission process provides a platform to submit work. Entries may be submitted as single images or a series of work on a particular theme. Maximum number of submissions is 20 images. All work must be accompanied by a 200 word Bio about the Artist/s and an Artist Statement no longer than 500 words which describes the process and intention of the work (single images or series). Digital submissions are preferred. Paper submission forms are also available at the museum. Please contact the museum if you plan to submit a paper submission form or printed work in lieu of the digital submission process. Prints will only be returned if photographer provides a self-addressed stamped envelope with proper postage. FAQsWhen do submissions close?Submissions close on Thursday, December 31 at 11:59pm.What are the restrictions on format and sizes?Submittable, our submission platform manager, allows uploads of all image and video files. There are no size limits when uploading to this cloud-based system. What if I plan to submit a paper application or physical work?Please contact the museum to schedule a time to drop-off these materials. If arranged before the submission deadline (12/31 at 11:59pm), there will be a grace period for accepting materials. I have more than one body of work. How do I submit this?Each person is limited to one submission. Each submission may have up to twenty images, regardless of it being a single image or part of a body of work. Please be sure to address each body of work in your artists statement. How many images can I submit?You can submit up to twenty images. These may be single images or a part of one or more bodies of work. Do I have to be a Staten Islander to qualify? Does the work have to be taken on Staten Island?No, we are looking for work made about Staten Island. This is a pretty loose interpretation. Any themes relating to contemporary happenings on the Island will qualify. I live or work on Staten Island – can I submit work on anything?Yes, you are looking at the world through the lens of Staten Island. This means your work qualifies. How many images should I submit?You should submit what you consider to be your best work. The more the better! What is an artist statement?An artist statement addresses the work that you are submitting. It should address the “how,” “what,” and “why” of your work. What is an artists biography?An artist biography tells about you as an photographer. Please be sure to list any formal or informal training, degrees, awards, and exhibition history.
