DISCOVERY DAY: EXPLORE UNOPENED SECTIONS OF FRESHKILLS PARK
Bike and hike 700 yet-to-be-opened acres of Freshkills Park
DATE: Sunday, September 30, 2018
TIME: 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
LOCATION: Freshkills Park 350 Wild Avenue Staten Island
Freshkills Park will host a free Discovery Day, opening more than 700 acres and eight miles of trails to the public for a day of bicycling, activities and tours. The free event offers New Yorkers a chance to explore the park before it opens and learn more about the landfill-to-park transformation. The site is otherwise closed to the public.
Activities: Rent a bike for free or bring your own to explore miles of paved roadway, including a three-mile loop along meadows and wetlands. NYC Audubon and NYC Parks will offer free guided walks. Self-guided hikes are also encouraged. Kids can engage in free activities, including wind-chime making and drawing workshops.
Shuttle buses will transport visitors to and from the St. George
Ferry Terminal (Ramp E, Taxi Stand) into the park. Those
arriving by bicycle can enter at the 350 Wild Ave. entrance.
For cars, parking will be available just outside Freshkills Park
in lots near 350 Wild Avenue. From there, visitors can take a
shuttle bus or walk one mile to the main event area.
This is one of two Discovery Days held each year at Freshkills Park, presented by NYC Parks, NYC Department of Sanitation and the Freshkills Park Alliance. Those interested can register here.
