SMART Recovery helps anyone wanting to abstain from any type of addictive behavior, substance or activity. SMART Recovery Family & Friends helps Concerned Significant Others (CSOs) of those troubled with addiction develop more helpful ways of responding to their loved one’s problematic behaviors and appreciate the importance of self-care.

SMART Recovery is a free, nonprofit, science-based, self-empowering recovery program. A non-step model, SMART offers an alternative to AA. SMART gives support by teaching how to change self-defeating thinking, emotions, and action, and how to work towards long-term satisfaction and quality of life.

SMART Recovery advocates choice, so that those seeking recovery can choose what works best for them from a ‘toolbox’ of methods and approaches. SMART Recovery’s tools are based on scientifically-tested methods, such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

The SMART approach:

Teaches tools and techniques for self-directed change,

Teaches self-empowerment and self-reliance,

Encourages individuals to recover and live satisfying lives,

Advocates the appropriate use of prescribed medications and psychological treatments.

The SMART Family & Friends approach:

Explores tools for CSOs to develop coping strategies for a loved one’s addictive behavior,

Helps CSOs find a greater sense of fulfillment in their own lives,

Fosters healthier interactions with their loved one, increasing chances they will seek recovery,

Explores CRAFT (Community Reinforcement and Family Training).
