About the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden

The New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden is the only authentic outdoor scholar’s garden on the East Coast of the United States. A team of 40 Chinese artists and craftsmen spent a year in China creating the Garden’s components and another six months in Staten Island as craftsmen-in-residence at Snug Harbor to complete the construction. It is based on Ming Dynasty Gardens (1368-1644) and is designed with elegance (ya, ) in mind. The garden is traditionally entered through a narrow passage where meditation takes place, prior to entering the main garden. The design of the garden produces harmony through its views and concepts. The garden creates an infinite space within an enclosed area. All funds raised during the Meditation in the Garden benefit will go directly towards the restoration of this garden which is a truly unique part of Staten Island and our community.
