Mosquito Spraying Events

The Health Department monitors mosquito populations and applies pesticides when appropriate throughout the summer to reduce the number of mosquitoes and to minimize the risk of mosquito-borne diseases such as the West Nile Virus and the Zika Virus.

The Health Department has two methods of pesticide application:

• Truck Spraying: Spraying pesticide from trucks to kill mosquitoes. For this method, larvicides (a pesticide that stops mosquitoes from growing into adults) or adulticides (a pesticide that kills adult mosquitoes) are used. These applications can happen in residential or non-residential areas.
• Aerial Larviciding: Dropping a larvicide made of natural bacterial granules by helicopter onto marshes and other large natural areas to kill mosquito larvae before they grow into adult mosquitoes. These applications do not take place in residential areas.
