Sanitation Service Alerts for Christmas Day and New Year’s Day

Due to the back-to-back Monday holidays, the Department of Sanitation will be working to collect Monday material, including trash and recycling. Residents will not be required to hold recycling material for multiple weeks. Please note that it is not unusual for collection times to be delayed after a holiday and during the winter season.

Christmas Day:

The New York City Department of Sanitation announced that there would be no garbage, recycling nor organics collection on Christmas Day, Monday, December 25, 2017.

  • Residents who normally receive Monday garbage, organics or recycling collection should place their materials out at curbside Monday evening after 4 p.m. for collection. Please note that it is not unusual for collection times to be delayed after a holiday and during the winter season.

In addition, all DSNY administrative offices will be closed on Monday, December 25, in observance of the holiday.

New Year’s Day:

The New York City Department of Sanitation announced that there would be no garbage, recycling nor organics collection on New Year’s Day, Monday, January 1, 2018.

  • Residents who normally receive Monday garbage, organics or recycling collection should place their materials out at curbside Monday evening after 4 p.m. for collection. Please note that it is not unusual for collection times to be delayed after a holiday and during the winter season.

In addition, all DSNY administrative offices will be closed on Monday, January 1, in observance of the holiday.

To help provide city residents with Sanitation-related service reminders, updates and special event schedules, the New York City Department of Sanitation has launched DSNY Info, its smart phone and tablet app. The app also includes tips to reduce, reuse and recycle, making it easier for New Yorkers send zero waste to landfills by 2030. The free app is available for both iOS and Android operating systems, and can be found by searching DSNY Info in the Apple App and Google Playstores.

The Department of Sanitation (DSNY) keeps New York City healthy, safe and clean by collecting, recycling and disposing of waste, cleaning streets and vacant lots, and clearing snow and ice. The Department operates 59 district garages and manages a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms and 693 salt/sand spreaders. The Department clears litter, snow and ice from approximately 6,500 miles of City streets and removes debris from vacant lots as well as abandoned vehicles from City streets.
