The Staten Island Greenmarket Book Swap, an offshoot of GrowNYC’s popular Stop ‘N’ Swap® reuse program, offers environmentally conscious New Yorkers a chance to find new homes for unwanted books, or take home new ones for their shelves. “Everyone knows New Yorkers have the coolest stuff. And you can find it at Stop ‘N’ Swap!” said GrowNYC Executive Director Marcel Van Ooyen. “These events bring neighbors together and reduce the city’s carbon footprint by facilitating reuse and encouraging waste reduction.” In response to increasing demand for reuse events, GrowNYC has set a goal of hosting one swap in each of the city’s 59 community districts each year, where the public can find new homes for reusable items of all kinds, including housewares, clothing, toys, and more.
This outdoor event will take place rain or shine.

Stop ‘N’ Swap is one way we pursue our mission to reduce waste and promote reuse in NYC. By participating in community swaps, New Yorkers simultaneously reduce their contribution to landfills and prevent the waste that comes from the production, packaging and transportation required to get new things. It’s also an opportunity to engage with NYC communities about recycling resources in their neighborhood and the services of GrowNYC’s zero waste programs funded by the NYC Department of Sanitation. Our goal is hold a swap in every community district in NYC every year, so that we can give everyone in the city an opportunity to reduce and reuse right where they live! What should I bring to the Stop ‘N’ Swap?
